After attending grammar school in Schiedam, he began studying oriental languages at the University of Leiden in 1919 . Here he mainly dealt with Arabic and Sanskrit . On July 8, 1927 he received his doctorate with the thesis De Middeljavaansche historical traditie (German: The Central Javanese historical tradition ) for a doctorate in philosophy. From that time on he intensified his scientific research and published several books on the Javanese culture and language. In 1938 he undertook another research trip to Indonesia, where the Second World War kept him for eight years instead of the planned two years. In 1946 he returned to the Netherlands and worked further than his chair at the University of Leiden. In 1947 he was accepted as a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences .

In the academy year 1948/49 he was elected rector of the alma mater , for which he gave the rector's speech Poëzie der herscheppende wetenschap (German: Poetry of the transformation of science ) on February 8, 1949 . On April 23, 1951 he took over the special professorship for the history and development of the Malay language at the University of Amsterdam , which he took over with the speech De problematiek van het Bahasa-Indonesia-experiment (German: The problematic of the Malay language experiment ) and alongside his Leiden professorship until 1967. In 1955 he began a series of publications on the last kingdom on the island of Java: Mataram . In 1962 and 1969 he published two works on Javanese Buddhism .
