Cornelius Darragh

Cornelius Darragh (* 1809 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ; †  December 22, 1854 there ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1844 and 1847 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Cornelius Darragh studied at the Western University of Pennsylvania in Pittsburgh until 1826 . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1829, he began to work in this profession in his hometown. He later embarked on a political career as a member of the Whig Party . Between 1836 and 1839 Darragh was a member of the Pennsylvania Senate ; from 1841 to 1844 he was a federal attorney for the western part of his state.

After the resignation of MP William Wilkins , Darragh was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC when he was due for election to the 21st seat of Pennsylvania , where he took up his new mandate on March 26, 1844. After being re-elected, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1847 . The period from 1845 onwards was marked by the events of the Mexican-American War .

Between 1849 and 1851 Cornelius Darragh held the office of Attorney General of Pennsylvania. He died on December 22, 1854 in Pittsburgh, where he was also buried.
