Jonathan Dickinson Sergeant ( Charles Willson Peale , 1786)

Jonathan Dickinson Sergeant (born 1746 in Newark , New Jersey Province, †  October 8, 1793 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . In 1776 and 1777 he was a delegate for New Jersey to the Continental Congress .

Career

In 1758, Jonathan Sergeant moved to Princeton with his parents . He attended the public schools in his respective homeland. In 1762 he graduated from Princeton College , later Princeton University . He then studied until 1763 at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1767, he began to work in Princeton in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career. In 1769 he was still in the colonial days district administrator ( surrogate ) in Somerset County . In the 1770s he joined the revolutionary movement. In 1774 he was secretary at the provincial convention in his homeland. From 1775 to 1776 he was a member of the New Jersey Provincial Congress. At times he was its chamberlain. In 1775 he was also a member of the security committee of his homeland.

In 1776 Sergeant was a member of the committee that drafted the first state constitution for New Jersey. Between February and June 1776 and between November 1776 and September 1777 he represented his state in the Continental Congress. In 1777 he moved to Philadelphia, where he continued his political career. In 1777 he became Attorney General of Pennsylvania. He held this office until 1780. He was also a member of the Security Council of this state in 1777. In 1782 he was Pennsylvania legal representative in a land dispute with the state of Connecticut . Jonathan Sergeant died in Philadelphia on October 8, 1793. He was the father of Congressman John Sergeant (1779-1852). Other descendants such as John Sergeant Wise (1846-1913), Richard Alsop Wise (1843-1900) and John C. Kunkel (1898-1970) also sat in Congress .
