The Corner Brook is a 19 km long tributary of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence in the west of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Newfoundland Island .
River course
The Corner Brook forms the outflow of the flow-regulated lake Corner Brook Lake . It initially flows 9 km north. Then he turns to the northwest. The river is dammed at a weir 6 km above the mouth. Below the weir, the river flows down through a gorge. Most of the river water, however, is fed to the Watsons Brook hydropower station via a 2.9 km long overhead pressure pipe . This has a capacity of 9.3 MW and is operated by Kruger Energy . Below the power station at river kilometer 2.8, Watsons Brook joins Corner Brook on the left. The Corner Brook then flows through the city of the same name . There is a weir on the banks of Margaret Bowater Park at river kilometer 2.2. The river is dammed by another weir 1.4 km above the mouth to Glynmill Pond . The Corner Brook finally flows into the south bank of the Humber Arm , a side bay of the Bay of Islands . Part of the catchment area of the Corner Brook serves the drinking water supply of the city of Corner Brook and is designated as a water protection area.
Hydrology
The catchment area of Corner Brook covers approximately 160 km². Below the hydropower plant, the mean discharge is 4.45 m³ / s. The highest discharges usually occur in May at 7.82 m³ / s.
Wildlife
The following fish species are found in Corner Brook: Brook char , Atlantic salmon , Arctic char , Arctic smelt , various sticklebacks , American eel , Fundulus heteroclitus (Mummichog) and Fundulus diaphanus (Banded killifish). The weirs at Glynmill Pond and Margaret Bowater Park have fish ladders . In the gorge above the hydroelectric power station there is a waterfall that acts as a natural obstacle for migratory fish . The salmon population in the Corner Brook river system is considered "not endangered" according to NASCO.
Typical aquatic inhabitants in the area are the American mink , North American river otter , Canadian beaver, and muskrat .
