Cornifrons ulceratalis is a butterfly from the family of Crambiden (Crambidae).

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 18 to 22 millimeters. The antennae of the males are ciliated. The forewings are rather narrow, pointed and have a sloping outer edge. They have a white or yellowish white basic color. The drawing consists of an octagonal or kidney-shaped discal spot , a curved, undulating inner transverse line and a strongly undulating outer transverse line, which, as in many Pyraustinae species, is strongly curved between the dorsal and discal spot. On the outer edge of the wing there are small black round dots between the wire ends. The fringed scales are whitish and marked with darker bands. The hind wings are pearly white and pale yellowish along the veins. The outer transverse line is invisible except for the dark spot on the CuA 2 vein . The hemline is dark and very pale. The fringed scales are white. The drawing is very variable. Some specimens are almost without drawings and only have a slightly darker discal spot and pale transverse lines. Others - especially around the disk spot and distal to the transverse lines - can be heavily speckled with coarse blackish scales. The darkest specimens have the whitest basic color, yellow specimens are often almost without drawings.

In the males, the uncus tapers to a blunt tip and has a few short, curved, hair-like bristles. The gnathos is tapered and has about four tiny teeth near the apex. The blades are slightly curved, have parallel walls and a rounded tip. The clasper is missing. In the distal part of the phallus there are two small cornuti groups.

In females, the corpus bursae is small and almost spherical. The backward lobus is as long as the corpus. The signs are wide. The ductus bursae tapers starting from the base, before the sclerotized colliculum it is widened and weakly sclerotized.

distribution

Cornifrons ulceratalis is common in the Canary Islands , Portugal , Spain , the Mediterranean islands including Crete, Southeast Europe, North Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya), Cyprus and Iran . Under favorable climatic conditions, specimens of Cornifrons ulceratalis can be drifted from North Africa to Europe by strong winds.

biology

In Algeria , caterpillars were found in the spun tips of the cruciferous vegetables Henophyton deserti and sesame ( Sesamum indicum ). Young caterpillars prefer fleshier leaves, where they eat the parenchyma . Older caterpillars then eat the entire shoot. In captivity it has been observed that they make spinning tubes in the sand. The fully grown caterpillars are reddish brown and have thin, pale longitudinal stripes. They pupate in a solid cocoon made of silk and sand particles. The moths fly from October to May, it is believed that this is a single generation.
