Corporal Punishment was a Finnish metal band from Helsinki that was formed in 1991 and disbanded around 1997.
history
The band was founded in 1991 and consisted of the bassist and singer Ali Suviala, the drummer Juha "Ykä" Hintikka and the guitarist Lare Nieminen. After two demo recordings and a self-financed single as well as local appearances, the band reached a recording contract with Spinefarm Records , which in 1992 released the debut album Profaned Relics . Then Markku "Nirri" Niiranen joined as a second guitarist. In 1994 the second album Into the Nerve of Pain, produced by Timo Tolkki , followed. After appearances together with Waltari , Paradise Lost and Amorphis , the band signed a contract with Black Mark Production , which in 1997 released the album Stonefield of a Lifetime . Then the band broke up.
style
According to Frank Stöver from Rock Hard , Stonefield of a Lifetime sounds modern, but not “trendy”, whereby influences from newer Parardise Lost (especially in the vocals and melodies) are processed. An expressive, deep and powerful singing in the style of David Vincent as well as a groove like there is on False by Gorefest can be heard. In addition, there is a power inherent in the music that is reminiscent of Carnivore albums, which can also be recognized by the clear, deep singing voice in the style of Peter Steele . The album was also reviewed on seaoftranquility.org and the music was described as a slow and oppressive form of heavy metal . Particularly noticeable is the singing, which is described as robust and deep, with a strong accent being heard. Thematically, you deal with the confrontation with personal demons, frustration with religion and the desire to be yourself without having to play something to people. Martin Popoff ordered the album in his book, The Collector's Guide of Heavy Metal Volume 3: The Nineties the doom metal to calling him oppressive and drowning with detuned instruments. Corporal Punishment found the middle ground on the album between Entombed and Edge of Sanity , whereby the songs, whose riffs mostly sound tough and whose grooves are more in the middle, would contain plaintive, deep vocals.
