Corps de Garde (Eng .: guard house ) is a mountain on the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean . Located in the Plaines Wilhems district, it rises to a height of 720 m . It belongs to the Moka Range and lies between the Mont du Rempart (545 m) and Le Pouce (812 m). The name goes back to a French military post on the mountainside that was set up to control gangs of runaway slaves.
The volcanic basalt rises abruptly from the surrounding area and is sometimes compared to a lying guard. Together with Mont Saint Pierre (317 m) in the southwest, it forms the remains of a crater that is open to the west. The mountain itself stretches from southeast to northwest. Today the La Ferme Reservoir is located in the crater basin .
nature
At the foot of the mountain are the places Beau Bassin-Rose Hill and Quatre Bornes . However, the mountain has been declared a nature reserve. Rare plants such as Trochetia parviflora (rediscovered 2001), Pilea trilobata (rediscovered 2005) and Hibiscus fragilis (mandrinette) thrive on 90.33 hectares .
