Corrado Pirzio-Biroli (* 25. November 1940 in Udine , Italy ) is an Italian EU - diplomat and author and son of the German-Italian nobles Fey von Hassell , daughter of the German local politician and resistance fighter Ulrich von Hassell and great-grandson of Alfred von Tirpitz . Due to his grandfather's involvement in the attempted coup against the Nazi regime and Adolf Hitler on July 29, 1944, he and his brother were forcibly separated from his mother and were special prisoners of the SS from 1944 to 1945 . Corrado Pirzio-Biroli is a long-serving European Commission official and current President of the European Landowners Organization (ELO) and Chief Executive Officer of the Rural Investment Support for Europe Foundation based in Brussels.

Life

Corrado Pirzio-Biroli is the son of Fey von Hassell and Detalmo Pirzio-Biroli . His brother is Roberto Pirzio-Biroli (* 1944), architect and lecturer at the University for Continuing Education in Krems . Both his brother and he were held in custody by the SS from 1944 to 1945 due to the activities of their grandfather Ulrich von Hassell .

His father's family served the Republic of Venice for centuries . His great-great-uncle Pietro di Brazzà Savorgnan was an African explorer and ruled French Equatorial Africa from the capital Brazzaville, which he founded. His maternal grandfather Ulrich von Hassell was a leading member of the opposition to Adolf Hitler and was involved in the attempted coup against the Nazi regime and Adolf Hitler on July 29, 1944. His mother Fey von Hassell became a prisoner of the SS, like himself and his brother Roberto. They were subsequently separated from their mother and were placed in an orphanage in Tyrol until they were rescued by their grandmother Ilse von Tirpitz in May 1945. Corrado Pirzio-Biroli holds a PhD in Economics and Commerce from the University of Rome. He is married and has a son.

  • Head of Cabinet for EU Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries Franz Fischler (1995-2004)
  • EU ambassador to Austria and to the United Nations in Vienna (1992–1994),
  • Head of the EU Delegation to the United States of America (1988–1992)
  • Deputy Head of the Department for the European Economic Area (1985–1988),
  • Member of the Cabinet of the President of the EU Commission Gaston Thorn (1982–1984)
  • EU financial advisor to the EU delegation to the USA in Washington (1978–1982)
