Correspondence is an American computer-animated short film directed by Zach Hyer in 2010 .

action

It's war. On the battlefield, a supervisor hands a soldier a sealed letter. The soldier rides through the combat zone on his bicycle, is shot at and takes cover, leaving the bag with the letter behind. He risks his life and rushes through the line of fire to get the bag and thus successfully deliver the letter. It reaches the addressee, who unseals the letter. It only contains the instruction "pawn on E3" - both men play a game of correspondence chess on the battlefield . The addressee writes down a new game instruction, seals the letter and gives it to the stunned soldier.

production

Correspondence is Zach Hyer's film debut. It was also his MFA thesis at the Department of Digital Arts at the Pratt Institute , New York City . The 3D animated film was created with the Maya software ; For the image synthesis , Hyer used the Mental Ray renderer integrated in Maya . The film was completed in April 2010 and premiered in July 2010.

The plot is accompanied by the instrumental piece Music Painters , which, like the sound effects, comes from Jin Soo Kin . The film, which Hyer described as a critique of power structures in general, does not contain any dialogue.

Award

At the 38th Student Academy Awards, Correspondence was awarded the gold medal in the "Animation" category. Hyer shared the award with Bernardo Warman and Shaofu Zhang, whose contribution Dragonboy also received the gold medal.
