Adolfo's armored catfish ( Corydoras adolfoi ) is a species of armored catfish that occurs exclusively in a small area of the upper Rio Negro near São Gabriel da Cachoeira in Brazil .

features

The up to 5.7 centimeters long armored catfish is very similar to the imitator armored catfish ( Corydoras imitator ) and Corydoras nijsseni , but differs from them by a red spot in front of the dorsal fin . Common to all three species is the dorsal dark stripe running along the back region and the dark "face mask ", have the same distribution area, but a slightly different head shape and feed differently, a case of Müllerian mimicry .

Habitat and way of life

Adolfo's armored catfish is a bottom-dwelling fish whose habitat includes small blackwater rivers and flooded rainforests, as are common on the upper reaches of the Rio Negro. Characteristic for these habitats is the low pH value , which is caused by the dissolved humic acids , as well as the electrolyte , nutrient and oxygen deficiency .

Reproduction takes place in swamps, ponds or rivers. The approximately 30 eggs are laid in small groups on aquatic plants. The young animals hatch after four days at a water temperature of 26 ° Celsius.

Danger

Adolfo's armored catfish is easy to keep in aquariums and after the species was discovered in 1982, thousands of animals were removed from their natural habitat. The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources still lists the species on the Red List as Least Concern , because the range is limited, but sometimes difficult to access for fishermen and catchers.
