Coryphantha nickelsiae is a species of plant in the genus Coryphantha from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet nickelsiae honors the Texan cactus collector Anna B. Nickels.

description

Coryphantha nickelsiae grows individually or forms low groups. The spherical glaucoma- dark green shoots reach heights of up to 11 centimeters with diameters of 5 to 7 centimeters. The shoots are almost completely covered by the overlapping thorns. The soft-fleshed, up to 10 millimeters long warts are bluntly conical. Occasionally they have nectar glands. The mostly single upright central spine , which can occasionally be missing, is straight or slightly curved and 1.1 to 1.6 centimeters long. The 13 to 20 crowded white radial spines have lengths of 1 to 2.3 centimeters.

The light yellow flowers reach a diameter of 4.5 to 5 centimeters. The gray-green or bright green fruits are up to 2.3 inches long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Coryphantha nickelsiae is found in the United States in the south of the state of Texas and in the Mexican states of Coahuila and Nuevo León under shrubs on limestone gravel.

The first description as Mammillaria nickelsiae by Mary Katharine Brandegee was published in 1900. Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose put the species in 1923 in the genus Coryphantha . A nomenclature synonym is Coryphantha sulcata var. Nickelsiae (K.Brandegee) LDBenson (1969).

Coryphantha nickelsiae is in the endangered Red List species the IUCN as " Least Concern (LC) ", d. H. not endangered, classified.
