Coryphantha unicornis usually grows individually, but sometimes also forms groups and forms thick roots . The spherical, bright, light blue-green shoots reach a diameter of 6 to 8 centimeters. The up to 15 millimeter long warts are not crowded together, are conical in shape and rounded towards the tip. Their axillae and areoles are often covered with red nectar glands . The single central spine is straight or slightly curved, dark reddish brown and 1.8 to 2 inches long. The seven to eight brownish gray, up to 1.5 centimeters long radial spines are straight and darker at their tips.

The flowers are pink in color. The green, reddish tinged fruits have lengths of up to 2 centimeters.

Distribution and systematics

Coryphantha unicornis is common in the Mexican state of Coahuila on clay soil.

The first description by Friedrich Bödeker was published in 1928. Reto F. Dicht and Adrian D. Lüthy treated the species in 2001 as a synonym of Coryphantha clavata subsp. clavata .
