Coryphantha vaupeliana is a species of plant in the genus Coryphantha from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet vaupeliana honors the German botanist and cactus specialist Friedrich Karl Johann Vaupel .

description

Coryphantha vaupeliana grows individually with spherical to egg-shaped, leaf-green shoots that reach heights of up to 8 centimeters with a diameter of 5 to 6 centimeters. The large, up to 20 millimeters long warts are more or less conical in shape and polygonal at their base. The woolly axillae carry nectar glands . The three to four strong, straight or slightly curved central spines are dark brown or black and up to 0.8 inches long. The approximately 17 radial spines have lengths of 0.8 to 1.8 centimeters. The upper ones are darker and directed upwards at their tip, the lower ones are radiating, yellowish and also have a darker tip.

The flowers are yellow and the fruits are green.

Distribution and systematics

Coryphantha vaupeliana is widespread on alluvial soil in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas near Jaumave .

The first description by Friedrich Bödeker was published in 1928. A synonym is Coryphantha daemenoceras var. Jaumavei Frič (1925, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 32.1c).
