The Coscinodiscophyceae are a class of diatoms . They used to be called centric diatoms (Centralis). However, there are also radial to bilaterally symmetrical representatives, the Cymatosiraceae are an example of this. All species belong to the plankton. They have lots of small chloroplasts . In the vegetative stage they are immobile. Only the spermatozoids, i.e. the male gametes , can move with the help of an apical flagella . They fuse with a female egg and a so-called auxospore is created . Stages of rest are also formed by many species. These are formed by algae in the vegetative state and differ morphologically from the vegetative cells .

Systematics

The Coscinodiscophyceae are currently divided into four subclasses with a total of 16 orders . (As of May 2017)
