Cosden Oil & Chemical Company

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cosden Petroleum was an American oil and chemical company, whose successor companies are now part of Total . Cosden was mainly active in Texas .

In 1958, Cosden Petroleum built a modern refinery with a polystyrene plant in Big Spring (Texas) . In 1963, Cosden Petroleum was taken over by Petrofina and renamed American Petrofina . That same year, the Cosden Oil & Chemical Company was formed to operate the petrochemical complexes in Big Spring and Colorado City . Other refineries were in Mt. Pleasant , Wichita Falls, and El Dorado, Kansas .

Cosden also operated a pipeline and product pipeline network that stretched north to Nebraska and Iowa .

Sales in fiscal 1963 was 156 million US dollars , equivalent to $ 1,300 million in today's money.

Cosden was the only company in the world that made ethylbenzene by separating it by distillation . This super fractionation required columns with over 300 theoretical plates and a reflux ratio of about 100: 1. From 1957 onwards, Cosden produced ethylbenzene with a capacity of 22,700 tons per year.

In 1968 Cosden Oil & Chemical entered into a joint venture with Borg-Warner , which built a styrene monomer plant in Louisiana . Their capacity was increased to 1 million t / a by 1980. With BFGoodrich , Cosden Oil & Chemical formed the Abtec Chemical joint venture in 1977 , which produced acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). In 1979 Abtec Chemical was sold to Mobay .
