Cotzraiz is a German punk band from the Ruhr area .

Band history

The band Cotzraiz was founded in 1994 on the outskirts of the Ruhr area. The band itself names their music style with the term Cotzrock. The inappropriateness, provocations and a consistent “anti-attitude” are strongly reminiscent of the early days of the punk movement. The band members themselves have also been part of the punk scene for decades and are also active in other punk music groups. The lyrics at Cotzraiz are in German and the music is often varied.

The A in the circle, which has always graced the band's lettering, symbolizes the closeness to anarchism . Nevertheless, the band is occasionally wrongly classified as politically right-wing, mostly by people unfamiliar with the scene. This is probably due to the band's provocative stylistic devices. An example of this is the "Heil Cotzraiz" logo, which was based on the swastika flag of the German Empire . Instead of the swastika , the inscription "Heil Cotzraiz" is in the white circle. This is probably a disparagement of the swastika flag. The symbol was used as a flag at concerts and later graced the cover of the debut album .

In 1996 Cotz-Rock Recotz was founded and the early, rare & extremely bad recordings -MC were made, which included rehearsal room recordings from the first two years. The leaflet accompanying the MC read: "We are guaranteed that only inferior tape recordings were used to produce this sound carrier".

In 1999 came the cz2x9 album (MC), which was limited to 100 copies at that time and was also published on Cotz-Rock Recotz. Everything was recorded and mixed by the band in the rehearsal room using an 8-track device that they had borrowed.

Since the band wanted to be independent from the start and stuck to old DIY ideas, a demo tape was never sent to record companies or producers. However, through Jennes (later bassist with Pöbel & Gesocks ) the contact with the record company Scumfuck Mucke came about. The band accepted an offered recording contract there. On the first weekend in August 2002 the album Heil Cotzraiz was released in the LP and CD version. The LP (red vinyl) and CD were each pressed 500 times in the first edition. In addition, the LP was hand-numbered, the inner sleeve was stamped and labeled and a sheet of text with lots of colorful photos was enclosed. There are also 28 unnumbered, unstamped LPs and three test pressings on black vinyl from this album. The album was recorded in the recording studio on the Ruhr.

The previous good cooperation with Willi Wucher and Scumfuck as a label as well as the friendship that developed prompted the band to continue to publish there. This is how the album 1000 Years of Cotzraiz came into being in 2005, one year late on its tenth anniversary . LP and CD were each produced 1000 times. The LP came on sun-yellow vinyl, in a black inner sleeve with a sticker plus an enclosed photo in a hinged cover and was again hand-numbered. In addition, there are 83 unnumbered LPs from this album with a white inner sleeve and six test pressings on black vinyl. This time it was recorded in Bottrop in the KS studio.

In April 2008 Willi Wucher announced the discontinuation of his Scumfuck label. Among other things, the label Sunny Bastards made the band an offer, which was accepted.

Due to line-up changes, the album Fehlpressung was released by Sunny Bastards in early 2011. The magazine Ox-Fanzine described the record as "an entertaining and entertaining album". The album was also rated positively in other ways, for example in the trendy magazine Moloko Plus , in the fanzine Oi! The Print or on Punkrocknews.de. Fehlpressung appeared both on CD and as a record with an edition of 500 copies. The record edition appeared hand-numbered on brightly speckled vinyl with a brightly printed inner sleeve and with stickers and posters. There are also 28 unnumbered LPs and three test pressings on black vinyl from this album.

Over the years the band could be seen live on stage across Germany and occasionally in neighboring countries and the group also gave rise to some non-commercial side projects, such as Cotz-Rock Recotz, FC Cotzrock, Cotzrock Cotzertz, Cotz- Rock Reisen, Cotz-Rock Radio etc.

criticism

The band behaves in its work to the outside world, but also within its own scene, rather stubborn than conform, and thus caused quite a stir.

Already with the sound carrier Heil Cotzraiz . Not only the album cover, but also some lyrics. For example, with the first song ( Stolz & stark ), pride in one's own scene was propagated and portrayed heroically. Other texts were not commonplace either, e.g. B. the title Ticks , in which criticism was made of parts of the own scene. Some critics falsely claimed that the band was part of the Nazi punk scene. In a Frontal21 television report on September 17, 2002 on ZDF , the Cotzraiz record was shown in connection with right-wing extremist sound carriers. Performance bans and boycotts by some phonogram sales outlets followed.

In the course of the band's history, Cotzraiz clearly distanced himself from the right-wing extremist scene several times in interviews, announcements at concerts and in some song texts.

Often in the texts the rebellion against authorities is propagated across the board.
