Council on International Educational Exchange

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The CIEE (CIEE) (dt .: Council for International Educational Exchange ) is a non-profit and non-governmental organization promoting international education and exchange of students. It was founded in 1947 and is based in Portland, Maine , United States.

Organization, tasks and goals

As of 2015, the CIEE is offering more than 175 multi-year studies abroad in its own centers in over 43 countries and organizing teaching programs in Chile , the People's Republic of China , Spain and Thailand . In addition, summer seminars are offered in 29 countries. Funding is mainly provided through the Work & Travel project in the USA, i.e. mainly through seasonal work in the USA for around 45,000 students per year. The organization also runs college exchange programs for American students with facilities in more than 30 countries.

The CIEE maintains its own educational institution, the CIEE Academic Consortium, in which interested parties can become members. The consortium lobbies for the CIEE. The members are thereby part of a worldwide association of colleges and universities, which is committed to top performance in international education. The graduates of such exchanges have now come together in their own network . In order to be able to take part in the exchange program as a German student, interested parties need the J-1 visa .

history

The foundation goes back to the situation after the end of the Second World War , in which international understanding had to be developed and trust between nations to be restored. Above all, great trust was placed in the influence of young people. Organizing trips for students and teachers was seen as an effective tool in achieving the stated goals. In 1994, US Senator J. William Fulbright summed up the goals in the following words: "Educational exchange can transform nations into people who, like no other form of communication, can work to improve international relations" ( Fulbright, 1994 ).

Immediately after the founding of the non-profit organization the CIEE, other organizations and religious groups sprang up in the United States to participate in the new educational exchange programs. The international educational exchange of young people had already started in the 1920s and was interrupted in 1939 by the Second World War.

In addition to the above-mentioned Work & Travel campaign, funding is provided by the participating higher education institutions such as Harvard University , Princeton University and Yale University . A total of 340 universities and colleges are members of the CIEE and regularly send students to study abroad (as of 2015).

In Germany , a separate campus opened on November 4, 2015 in Berlin-Kreuzberg , Gneisenaustraße 27, which, when fully expanded, can accommodate 700 students, of whom around 200 can then be accommodated in the dormitory there. A previous institution for 30 students had been in Berlin-Mitte since the late 1990s . To improve the contacts between foreign students and young Berliners, there is the buddy project , in which Berlin students become personal contacts for guests and live with them in the CIEE Global Institute.

It is also noteworthy that the CIEE has established a study center at the Vietnam National University , where around 50 international students can learn the Vietnamese language or study other fields of science. There is also such an educational center in Khon Kaen , Thailand .
