Cova Joana lies in the mountains almost exactly in the middle of the island in a depression. This is where the name of the village comes from - in Cape Verde, “ cova ” means a crater or a hollow. Cova Joana is connected to the island's capital, Vila Nova Sintra, about six kilometers away , and the pilgrimage site of Nossa Senhora do Monte , about a kilometer to the south, by a good road that is passable in all weathers. The small port of Fajã de Água on the west coast of Brava can be reached downhill via a hiking trail. The highest mountain on the island of Brava, the 976 m high Alto de Fontainhas , can also be reached via a hiking trail.

Special features and infrastructure

The island of Brava is considered the greenest island in Cape Verde: Since it is often under a cloud cover, evaporation is less than on the other islands. The moisture lingers a little longer in the Cova Joana depression, where agriculture (especially corn, bananas, beans) is the main source of income for the population. Quite a few houses in Cova Joana have a garden where vegetables are successfully planted for personal use. Also noteworthy is the hibiscus -lined main street of the village, in which several new buildings in the style of old colonial mansions (so-called sobrados ) have been built.

One of Cape Verde's most important musicians lived in Cova Joana, the violinist Raúl de Pina , who had over 30 children and even owned a Stradivarius . His house can be seen at the entrance to the village on the right-hand side and can be viewed on request. Raúl de Pina was a friend of the Cape Verdean national poet Eugénio Tavares (1867-1930), who also lived on Brava.

In the main street of the village there is a small shop for daily needs, a simple restaurant and a pension. Cova Joana also has a school, but not a church.

Transport links

Cova Joana can be reached several times a day from the island's capital, Vila Nova de Sintra, and from Nossa Senhora do Monte, using the buses known as " Aluguer " , which are typical for Cape Verde. However, they do not operate according to a fixed timetable, but leave when enough passengers have arrived. On the way, they stop when needed when someone wants to get on or off.
