The Cove Burying Ground is a historic cemetery in Eastham in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . It was used for funerals from 1646 to 1770 and was inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.
general description
The cemetery is located in the southeast Easthams at the Massachusetts Route 6 and was named after the bay ( english cove named) to which it is adjacent. The property has a rectangular floor plan with a total area of around 1 acres (0.4 ha ) and is bordered on the north, south and west sides by granite pillars connected with iron bars and by irregularly planted trees in the east. The main entrance for pedestrians is on the west-facing side of the street.
The Cove Burying Ground is one of the few structures from the founding days of Eastham that has survived from the mid-17th century. It was built in 1646 right next to the city's first town hall and used until 1770, although in 1720 the construction of the Bridge Road Cemetery began a smooth transition phase to the new cemetery. Many of Eastham's first settlers are buried at Cove Burying Ground.
The cemetery comprises a total of 50 known graves, 37 of which still have their original gravestone. Most were made of slate , but there are also two gravestones made of sandstone and one made of phyllite . In their entirety, they show the tombstone art of the colonial era.
