The Coyotepe is a mountain two kilometers north of Masaya in Nicaragua. A fortress was built on it. Coyotepe is located in the Masaya Caldera east of the Masaya volcano .

Surname

The name is composed of the Aztec Cóyotl for coyote and the Nahuat tepe for hill or mountain.

history

On July 18, 1888, the then mayor of Masaya, Rafael Zurita, granted the concession for the construction and operation of a drinking water supply for the city of Masaya. For this purpose, water from the (now dried up) Río Grande de Ticuantepe was dammed and led in a 26 km long metal pipeline to a 2728 m³ elevated tank 218 meters lower on the flank of the Coyotepe.

Under the government of José Santos Zelaya , a fortress was built in 1893 to control the rail link from Granada to Corinto (192 km).

On October 3rd and 4th, 1912, during the Guerra de Mena , Coronel Isidoro Díaz Flores defended this position. Defense Minister Benjamin Zeledón , who was also present , was shot dead in the course of the fighting.

Anastasio Somoza García had the fortress expanded into barracks from 1936 . Between 1958 and 1961 , mercenaries were trained at the fortress in preparation for the Bay of Pigs invasion .

After the coup attempt in April 1954 , the Somoza clan used the fortress as a prison where torture was also carried out. The prisoners were Diego Manuel Chamorro and Francisco Frixione Saravia. After the Sandinista Revolution in 1979, around 800 prisoners were released and the fortress continued to be used as a prison until 1983. It was then handed over to the Asociación de Niños Sandinistas (ANS) children's organization . In the 1980s, the facility was converted into a leisure and recreation center, with a playground and sports field, camping area and museum. The city of Dietzenbach and the Hessian Youth Ring financed this project based on the existing city partnership with 700,000 US dollars. The Dietzenbach Solidarity Committee organized work brigades to support the construction work.

Today the facility is maintained by the Nicaraguan scouts. It is a destination for excursions including a view of the Laguna de Masaya .

Loma La Barranca

An incision in Coyotepe was used and deepened for the railway, the part separated from Coyotepe is called Loma La Barranca (German for the gorge, the bottleneck).
