Benjamin Francisco Zeledón Rodríguez (born October 4, 1879 in La Concordia , Jinotega Department , Nicaragua ; † October 4, 1912 in the Coyotepe area , Masaya ) was a Nicaraguan lawyer, politician and military.

Life

After attending primary school, Zeledón went to Honduras in 1895 , where he graduated from high school ( Bachiller ) in sciences, humanities and philosophy in 1899 . He then studied at the Universidad de Honduras Jura . At the same time he worked as a teacher. On September 17, 1903, he was by the Nicaraguan President de José Santos Zelaya of doctoral degrees awarded. He then served as the chief official ( oficial mayor ) of the Supreme Court in the districts of Managua , Rivas and Cabo Gracias a Dios .

In 1905 he married Ester Ramírez Jerez; the couple had four children. In the 1907 war against El Salvador and Honduras, Zeledón was Auditor de Guerra y Marina . March 1907 took part in the Battle of Namasiugt . For this he was promoted to colonel on August 9, 1907 . He trained himself militarily. In 1908 he was a minister on a special mission in Guatemala . At that time he was already one of the leading intellectuals of the Nicaraguan Liberals. In March 1910 he was promoted to General by President José Madriz and on July 20, 1910 to the Secretario de Guerra y Marina .

In 1907 Zeledón Syndicus was the municipality of Managua and suggested that Rubén Darío be promoted.

Zeledón was defense minister in the government cabinet of José Santos Zelaya when he waged war against the governments of El Salvador and Honduras in 1907. This war was decided in favor of Nicaragua by the battle of Namasigüe . When the liberal government of José Madriz was overthrown in 1910 and the country was occupied by North American troops, Zeledón, who was then defense minister, had to flee to Costa Rica and worked there as a lawyer. But he came back in 1912 and joined the insurgent troops of General Luís Mena Solórzano against the North American-backed conservative government of Adolfo Díaz . After initial successes, the troops under his leadership had to retreat and take refuge in Masaya. To suppress the uprising, the North Americans sent a contingent of troops to Nicaragua. The troops disembarked in Corinto port in August 1912. In September, Luis Mena, the main leader of the insurgents, surrendered. Zeledón, however, refused to lay down his arms. The cooperative forces of the North American and the Conservative Nicaraguan government met with the insurgents. Zeledón was fatally wounded in combat with conservative troops and US Marines on October 4, 1912 during the Battle of Coyotepe near Masaya . The circumstances of his death are still controversial today.
