Craig Ailey

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Craig Ailey is the name of a villa in the Scottish village of Cove on the Rosneath Peninsula in the Argyll and Bute Council Area . The building is located on the southern edge of the coastal town in the border area to neighboring Kilcreggan . It is in a prominent position around 25 m above the junction of Loch Long from the Kyles of Bute , less than 200 m from the coast. For this reason it represents a prominent point along the coastline from the water side. In 1971, Craig Ailey was included in the Scottish list of monuments in the highest category A.

description

The mansion was built in 1850 for John McElroy , a wealthy steel and railroad businessman who developed the south coast of Rosneath. As an architect, Alexander Thomson was responsible for the planning. The building was presented in detail in Villa and Cottage Architecture and was described as a good example of the adaptation of Italian villa architecture to the needs of the 19th century in the historicizing Italianate style . Craig Ailey is considered exemplary of Thomson's villa architecture in this phase. The two-story building is made of roughly hewn natural stone from sandstone or dark stone types on a rectangular base and thus takes up the motif of the surrounding cliff landscape. The windows and building edges are decorated with coarse stones in contrasting colors. The enclosure wall consists of dark stone. In the north there is a gate with ornate sandstone pillars. Today the building is almost in its original condition.
