Craigengillan

Craigengillan is a manor house near the Scottish village of Dalmellington in the East Ayrshire council area . In 1989, the building was included in the Scottish monument lists, initially in monument category B. The upgrade to the highest monument category A took place in 2001. Furthermore, various buildings on the associated lands are also listed.

history

Due to their military service, the McAdam clan under William McAdam was awarded the lands of Craigengillan in 1611. In the following century they expanded their holdings, particularly in Parish Dalmellington. After the family initially lived inconspicuously and mainly concentrated on the village of Straiton (now part of South Ayrshire ), the new acquisitions led to a greater concentration on Dalmellington.

The nucleus of today's Craigengillan House already existed at this time. John McAdam significantly expanded the building in 1765. He also initiated numerous construction projects in the area, including the road between Dalmellington and New Cumnock and a dyke system that received national attention. The manor house has been expanded over the centuries and external buildings have been added.

description

Craigengillan is three kilometers south of Dalmellington, 300 m west of the Doon . Noteworthy are the glazed Gothic arcades along the front and the tall, crenellated tower, possibly designed by David Hamilton . The French Maison Jansen is partly responsible for the interior design .

stables

Craigengillan's stables

The stables are independently listed as a category A monument. There is no monument ensemble with another building. The classicist building dates from the late 18th century. It is two-story and completely encloses an inner courtyard. This is accessible via an arched doorway with a tower towering over it. This is designed with a tower clock and a Venetian window . It closes with an octagonal dome supported by pilasters with a weather vane. The roofs are covered with gray slate.

Lodge

The lodge is classified as a Category B monument. It flanks the north approach to the lands near Dalmellington. The one-story building has a slate-roofed gable roof with a slight slope. Worth mentioning are the keel-arched windows and the half-glazed entrance door with pearl cords .

Linn River Bridge

Linn River Bridge

About two kilometers south of the lodge is the Linn River Bridge, which is a Category B monument. It leads the main access road to Craigengillan over the Doon. It is a stone arch bridge with a flat parapet. It spans the doon with a single arch. The masonry is embossed in the arch area .

Dalcairnie Bridge

After John Loudon McAdam returned to Scotland from America in 1783, he implemented an extensive road construction program. It is likely that Quintin McAdam , an expert in the field of road construction, was involved in this program. The Dalcairnie Bridge is classified as a Category C structure. It was probably built in the course of these building projects in the late 18th century. The building is shown on a map from 1812, but not yet on an older map from 1775. The bridge lies in the western part of the Craigengillan lands. It crosses a path that is now insignificant over the Dalcairnie Burn stream .

Craigengillan Bridge

Most recently, the Craigengillan Bridge, located around 700 m northeast of Craigengillan, is classified as a Category C monument. The one-horse arch bridge leads a now insignificant path over the Doon. The layered masonry consists of sandstone . Allegedly French prisoners of war of the Napoleonic Wars built the bridge. In 2007 her condition was described as near ruin.
