Craiu Iovan Craiova was a Romanian football club from Craiova , Dolj County . He reached the finals of the Romanian football championship twice in the 1920s . Because of the phonetic similarity, it is often referred to as Craiovan Craiova .

history

Craiu Iovan was founded in 1921 by a group of students, workers and officials under the direction of Dr. Marcel Spânişteanu founded. The club played in the regional championship of Little Wallachia to qualify for the final round of the Romanian football championship . The club succeeded in doing this for the first time in 1926 , when it lost to Juventus Bucharest in its first game on a national level . Two years later Craiu Iovan again managed the regional championship, this time in the first game of the national finals Șoimii Sibiu was the winner.

In the following years, the club did not manage to prevail in the regional championship. When the league operations were introduced in 1932 with the establishment of Divizia A , Craiu Iovan was not taken into account. It was not until 1935 that the qualification for the now established substructure, the Divizia B, was achieved . In Season II, which included the clubs around Timișoara and Craiova , the club finished sixth out of eight teams and was allowed to play in the West group in the 1936/37 season after the seasons were combined. A year later the club was divided into the Northern group. He finished both seasons with a place in midfield.

In 1938, the Divizia B was expanded because the third Romanian division, the Divizia C , did not come into being that year. Craiu Iovan played in the South-West group and again occupied a midfield position. In 1940 the club merged with local rival Rovine Grivița Craiova , who was also playing in Divizia B, to form FC Craiova , which became one of the best Romanian football teams during World War II .
