Crap Fraissen

The Crap Fraissen ( Eschenstein ) is a five-meter-high boulder made from Ilanz Verrucano rock. It is located on a hiking trail a good 500 meters above Lake Laax in Laax in the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland .

meaning

From the stone you had a wide view of the village, the lake and the surrounding meadows. In the Bronze Age , 3000 years ago, people engraved indentations on its surface , the meaning of which is unclear today. It is conceivable that the course of the stars was observed from the stone, comparable to the Parc la Mutta astronomical facility in nearby Falera . A bearing line points from Crap Fraissen over the tower of the church of Valendas to the point on the horizon where the sun rose on the day of the winter solstice .

Some of the bowls are connected with gutters, which are interpreted as "blood gutters" in connection with a sacrificial cult. The six engraved letters are much more recent; its meaning is unclear. They could be related to the Christianization of such prehistoric cult stones.

legend

There is a legend associated with Crap Fraissen:

Witches and evil spirits are said to have lived above Laax, who were jealous of the inhabitants of the village and decided to destroy the village and its inhabitants. A mighty block of stone lay far above Laax. They wanted to throw him into the lake so that a tidal wave would flood and destroy the village. One day, just before dawn, they set the stone in motion, and it rolled in giant leaps down the mountain towards the lake. When he reached the lake shortly, the largest bell in the Church of St. Remigius began to ring the day in Falera. Instantly the boulder stopped and dug deep into the steep slope where it still stands today. Thus the bell of St. Remigius saved the village of Laax from ruin.
