Gameplay

Crawl is a cross-genre game with rogue-like , bullet-hell and brawler elements for up to four offline players and bots. The main player steps through randomly generated dungeons as a human hero , while up to three other ghost players control the enemies of the dungeon and build traps to kill the main player. The ghost player who kills the human hero switches roles to become the next main player. Players gain experience as they progress through the dungeon in both the roles of the human hero and the roles of the non-human spirit. The hero's experience unlocks new attacks and spells, while the experience as a ghost allows you to take possession of stronger enemies. Each player's progression of the human hero experience, weapon, and stats is maintained between rounds. Designed to be fast-paced and arcade-like rather than strategic, Crawl includes activities of the genre standard, such as loot collecting, upgradeable weapons, and magical items. Once the ghosts have "monster spawners" and traps, they cannot leave the form until they die or kill the main character. The players and enemies become more and more powerful as the game progresses. The game ends when a human hero reaches experience level 10, enters a portal and defeats an end boss whose body parts are jointly controlled by the other players. Typical matches last about 30 minutes.

development

Barney and Dave from Powerhoof

Crawl was developed by Powerhoof, a two-person indie studio based in Melbourne . They described the game as their version of the four-player Gauntlet combined with the Japanese Bullet Hell genre, or as a combination of Super Bomberman and The Legend of Zelda . The game was created on the Unity engine, and the developers created a pixel-perfect version of Gabe Newell as the in-game boss.

The game was greenlit on Steam within 24 hours . There is no online multiplayer . The game should first be released on Steam in Early Access in July 2014 , but has been postponed due to an issue related to tax payments and the establishment of Powerhoof as a company. The game was released on August 6, 2014 on Steam Early Access for Microsoft Windows , OS X and Linux platforms . The full version was released on April 11, 2017 for PC , PlayStation 4 and Xbox One . A Wii U console version was planned for 2014.

reception

Critics rated Crawl as a trend in local multiplayer functionality among indie games. USgamer's Pete Davison wrote that the game spanned multiple genres and was an example of the resurgence of couch coop fashion trends . Rock, Paper, Shotguns Nathan Grayson compared the game's premise to Dungeonland. Marcus Estrada of Hardcore Gamer called the concept of the game "awesome" and praised its ability as a party game. While reviewing a pre-release version, Estrada wrote that the game had issues with the pace of gameplay, lackluster artificial intelligence, and opportunities for gamers to delay the game.

The game sold over 10,000 times in the first 12 days.
