Creede, Colorado is a small community in Mineral County , Colorado . Creede is the county seat of Mineral County.
The place is located in the San Juan Mountains in the headwaters of the Rio Grande on Willow Creek, which flows into this approx. 3.5 km downstream. It was named after Nicholas C. Creede . Around 1840 the first farmers settled on the upper reaches of the Rio Grande. Silver finds in the surrounding mountains were mined with little success from 1869. It was not until 1889 that there was a silver boom in the mountains around Creede. At times around 10,000 people lived in the region. Mining has continued since then until 1985. Nevertheless, the population fell to 290 (2010). The Denver and Rio Grande Western Railway Company tied the community to the railway network. Today tourism is the town's most important source of income.
Attractions
Creede has a town center with some historic buildings and art galleries. The Creede Historical Museum informs about the past of the city, it is located in the old station building. The Underground Mining Museum documents the legacy of mining. The Bachelor Loop Trail offers mountain bikers, hikers and off-road vehicle drivers an insight into the surrounding mountains with many remains of mining. In the west, above the village, is the historic cemetery with graves from the pioneering days. A few kilometers south-east, in the Rio Grande breakthrough valley, is the railway station of the same name at the Wagon Wheel Gap , which is registered in the National Register of Historic Places .
