The generic name is derived from the transverse folds that are mainly present in the front area, which give the body a notched appearance (from Latin crenatus 'notched', Greek soma 'body'). The larvae enter the outside world with the feces. Snails serve as intermediate hosts, and in one species also fish. The mating bag is well developed.
