Criação Velha is a Portuguese municipality ( freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Madalena , on the Azores island of Pico . 768 inhabitants live in the municipality (as of June 30, 2011).
history
After the settlement of the island of Pico in 1460, cattle was raised here. The current community name (dt .: old cattle breeding) goes back to it. From the 16th century, viticulture was also intensified here. The municipality, which previously belonged to Madalena, became independent in 1799.
In 2004, the wine-growing culture of the island of Pico, also cultivated in the municipality of Criação Velha, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List .

Special and worth seeing
The single-nave parish church Igreja de Nossa Senhora das Dores , to which a representative avenue of plane trees leads, was built in 1728. In the town center there are still several well-preserved houses from the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. The year of construction of the Holy Spirit Chapel near the church is given in the gable as 1902.
