Cricetulodon is an extinct genus of mice . It is known from the Upper Miocene of France and Spain and has probably evolved into rotundomys .
Body features
Cricetulodon has three initially high-crowned molars in each half of the jaw . The anterolophid of the first lower molar is predominantly on the lip side. The mesoloph and mesolophid of all teeth as well as the anterosinusid of the second mandibular molar and the posterior tongue- sided corner of the third mandibular molar tend to be smaller.
The first maxillary molar is almond-shaped, with an almost straight lip-side and a strongly curved tongue-side edge. The point furthest on the tongue is behind the protocon . The anterolophul spur on the lip side is usually absent, rarely short. The third upper molar is round, as long as it is wide, or shorter than it is wide.
Distribution and Tribal History
Cricetulodon is known from the Vallesian and Turolian of France and Spain 11.6 to 7.0 million years ago. It could be a locally developed lineage of small to medium-sized hamsters that descended from the Democricetodon of the early Vallesium and evolved into rotundomys .
Systematics
Cricetulodon
McKenna and Bell (1997) assign Cricetulodon as a synonym of the genus Rotundomys , Freudenthal et al . (1998 ) assign the Cricetinae as an independent genus . There are five types :
- Cricetulodon bugesiensis Freudenthal et al., 1998 - late Vallesium
- Cricetulodon hartbergeri (Freudenthal, 1967) - Vallesium
- Cricetulodon lucentensis (Freudenthal et al., 1991) - medium turolium
- Cricetulodon meini (Agustí, 1986)
- Cricetulodon sabadellensis Freudenthal et al., 1998
Cricetulodon bugesiensis and Cricetulodon sabadellensis are about the same size, Cricetulodon hartbergeri is smaller. Jean-Louis Hartenberger introduced the genus Cricetulodon in 1966. The type species is Cricetulodon sabadellensis .
Cricetulodon meini
The type specimen of Cricetulodon meini with the inventory number IPMC FCA-237 is the first molar of a right half of the lower jaw. Named after Pierre Mein , Jordi Agustí describes this in 1986 as Kowalskia meini . Freudenthal et al . (1998) assign the species to the genus Cricetulodon .
Cricetulodon sabadellensis
The type specimen of Cricetulodon sabadellensis with inventory number IPMC CL 1392 is an upper jaw with first and second molars on the right half of the jaw. Named after the city of Sabadell in the province of Barcelona, Matthijs Freudenthal, Pierre Mein and Elvira Martín-Suárez describe this in 1998.
