The Crinan Canal is a canal in western Scotland . The approximately 14 km (9 miles ) long canal cuts through Knapdale north of the Kintyre Peninsula and connects the Jurassic Sound in the west with Loch Gilp , a small tributary of the Firth of Clyde , in the east. The canal begins in the east in Ardrishaig and initially runs parallel to the sea to the north. Then it branches off to the northwest, passes the highest point at Cairnbaan and ends near the eponymous village of Crinan . The height difference is overcome by a total of 15 locks.

Construction of the canal, designed by John Rennie senior , began in 1794 and lasted until 1801. However, various problems made it necessary to remodel it by Thomas Telford in 1816. The Crinan Canal was an important addition to the Caledonian Canal further north in the 19th century , as it avoided a long detour around the Kintyre Peninsula and Cape Mull of Kintyre .
