Crispin Odey

Robin Crispin William Odey (born January 1959 in Yorkshire ) is a British hedge fund manager. He became known, among other things, through speculation on Brexit and against the Wirecard share .

Life

Odey studied history and economics at Christ Church College , Oxford . He graduated in 1980. He also trained as a barrister , but never did the job. In 1983 he started at Framlington, which he left in 1985 to join Barings International. In 1991, he founded his own fund company, Odey Asset Management, with $ 150 million from George Soros , among others .

He was married to Rupert Murdoch's eldest daughter , Prudence. The couple separated after a year. In 1991 he married Nichola Pease from one of the founding families of Barclays Bank . He has two children with her.

He keeps chickens on his country estate.

Odey was charged by UK prosecutors on May 14, 2020, of indecently assaulting a woman in 1998. He denied this to the Reuters news agency . The first court hearing will take place on September 28, 2020.

Investments

After the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , Odey made a profit, speculating that people would buy more insurance.

Odey first became known to a wider public when he recognized the weakness of the banks before the world financial crisis and speculated against them. For this he paid a total of £ 28 million in 2008. The Brexit advocate also correctly bet on the British decision to leave the EU , among other things because he had commissioned his own surveys. Nevertheless, his fund lost double-digit percentages in 2015, 2016 and 2017.

When Wirecard got caught up in a fraud and money laundering scandal in February 2019, Odey speculated on a fall in the company's share price.
