Cristóbal de Mondragón

Cristóbal de Mondragón y Otalora (* 1514 in Medina del Campo , Valladolid , † January 4, 1596 in Antwerp ) was an army leader in the Eighty Years War , who u. a. commanded the recapture of Kerpen Castle from the Dutch under Bilius von Utrecht on Epiphany in 1579 .

In 1572 he liberated Goes , besieged by the Geusen , whereupon he was appointed governor of Zeeland by the Duke of Alba . From 1578 to 1579 he was governor of Limburg . On February 21, 1574 he handed the city of Middelburg over to William of Orange .

Two years later he besieged Zierikzee and captured it. After conquering this city, he could not prevent the Spanish soldiers, who had not been paid for years, from mutinying. Under Alessandro Farnese he took part in the siege of Maastricht in 1579 . His last campaign was in 1595. He succeeded in breaking the siege of Groenlo by Prince Moritz of Orange , whereupon Mondragon drove out the cavalry of Philip of Nassau and took him prisoner.

He died as governor of Antwerp in the citadel there.
