Cristian Terheş

Cristian-Vasile Terheş (born December 4, 1978 in Zalău ) is a Romanian Greek Catholic priest , commentator and member of the European Parliament since 2019 . He was elected to the list of the social democratic Partidul Social Democrat (PSD), but switched to Partidul Național Țărănesc Creștin Democrat and the European Conservatives and Reformers Group in May 2020 .

Terheş studied theology at the Babes Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca . He then studied journalism at Fullerton College and communications at Santiago Canyon College in California , United States . He settled in Irvine , California, became a clergyman in the Romanian Greek Catholic Church, but also worked as a business analyst.

He was involved in Romanian politics, especially in opposition to the ruling PSD, which he accused of corruption . He became known in 2012 when he was lobbying for the president, who was opposed by Social Democrats , as part of the referendum campaign on the removal of Romanian President Traian Băsescu in the US Congress. In 2014 he campaigned against the election of PSD chairman Victor Ponta as president.

In 2016 he became a regular commentator on the PSD-related TV channel Antena 3 and România TV . At the same time he became a supporter of the ruling PSD, in his public comments he advocated the suspension of the national liberal President Klaus Iohannis . At the constitutional referendum in Romania in 2018 , he advocated the ban on homosexual marriages; after its failure he feared that the “homosexual agenda in Romania would become more violent”. In 2019 he ran for fourth place on the PSD list for the European elections and was elected a member of the European Parliament.

In May 2020 he declared that he would join the Partidul Național Țărănesc Creștin Democrat and the European Conservatives and Reformists Group .
