Johannes Schiess (entrepreneur)

Johannes Schiess (born September 6, 1780 in Hundwil ; † November 20, 1859 in Herisau ; legal resident in Herisau) was a Swiss textile entrepreneur and member of the Small Council from the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

Life

Johannes Schiess was the son of Sebastian Schiess, pastor and dean , and Elisabeth Enz. In 1799 he married Anna Elisabeth Mettler, daughter of Valentin Mettler, muslin manufacturer . He completed a commercial apprenticeship in Herisau. In 1797 Schiess founded a yarn and white goods business with his brother Johann Ulrich Schiess . Her brother Johann Jakob Schiess also joined this in 1802. Despite the continental barrier from 1806 to 1813, they led the business to peak. His brothers retired in 1834. Schiess continued the business with his son Johann Ulrich Schiess as J. Schiess & Compagnie. From 1835 to 1849 he presided over the Ausserrhoder Small Council and from 1836 to 1841 he was an auditor. Schiess was considered the richest citizen in the canton. He audited large sums for charitable purposes. In 1835 and 1836 he financed the construction of the Herisau- Schönengrund road . In 1824 he was a co-founder of the Herisau savings bank and in 1837 a founding shareholder of the bank in St. Gallen .
