The Imperato Crocus ( Crocus imperati ), also devil Crocus called, is a plant from the genus of crocus ( Crocus ) in the family of the Iridaceae (Iridaceae).
features
The imperato crocus is a perennial tuber geophyte that reaches heights of 5 to 10 centimeters. The tuber shell is parallel-fibred. The inside of the flowers is purple, the outside is yellowish-straw-colored and distinctly darker purple stripes. The perigone measure 25 to 45 × 7 to 18 millimeters.
The flowering period extends from January to March.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 26.
Occurrence
The Imperato crocus is found in western Italy. The species grows on dry pastures and maquis .
Systematics
There are two subspecies :
- Crocus imperati subsp. imperati has two bracts,
- Crocus imperati subsp. suaveolens (Bertol.) B.Mathew (Synonym: Crocus suaveolens Bertol. ) has only one bract.
use
The imperato crocus is rarely used as an ornamental plant for rock gardens and borders. The species has been in culture since 1825 at the latest. 'De Jager' is a cultivar from subsp. suaveolens .
