Croil Island is an uninhabited island in the St. Lawrence River in the area of the Town of Louisville in St. Lawrence County , New York State . The island covers 796 acres (3.22 km²) and is under conservation as an undeveloped Croil Island State Park .

geography

The island is one of the thousands of islands in the Saint Lawrence River. It is also on the border between the United States and Canada . The island stretches in the current from southwest to northeast and only has a few small bays on the northern edge. It takes roughly the shape of a footprint. The northern tip is known as Talcotts Point . North of the southern end are three other tiny islets and also to the east are two islands on the Big Sny Channel , which are part of the state park . Almost 500 m further to the west is the island of Morrison Island on the Canadian side and to the north, also on Canadian territory, in South Stormont (Ontario) with Bredin Island and the Woodlands Islands there are a dozen small islets. The closest notable islands on the American side are Wilson Hill Island in the south and Long Sault Island in the northeast.

The fairway of the Saint Lawrence Seaway runs south of the island. The island is densely forested.

history

The island was considered British territory before 1818 , then it was officially transferred to the United States.

Croil Island takes its name from the Scottish family who farmed the island in the mid-18th century. Before William Croil acquired the island in 1835, it was known as Stacey Island . Other historical names include: Baxter Island , Grand Eddy Island , Ile au Chamailles , Tsiiowenokwakarate and Upper Sault Island .

A lawsuit for land claims by the Akwesasne of a St. Regis Mohawk tribe in the 1980s was ruled negative by the United States District Court for the Northern District of New York . It wasn't until 2013 that the tribe's land claim was finally denied, while claims to other areas were confirmed.

Croil Island State Park

Croil Island is now a protected area as Croil Island State Park . The state park has no infrastructure and is administered by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation . The land is owned by the New York Power Authority . The island is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, but there are issues with littering and illegal camping (2011).
