Crucigenia is a genus of colony-forming green algae fromthe Trebouxiophyceae class .

features

The representatives form flat, square colonies. Four small, uniform cells form a square. The individual cells are 4 to 10 micrometers long and have the shape of a triangle or trapezoid. They have a single, wall-mounted chloroplast that does not completely fill the cell. A pyrenoid may be present or absent. The starch is formed within the plastid. The nucleus is in the middle of the cell. Several colonies can also be connected to one another in a jelly.

Asexual reproduction occurs through the formation of four-cell autocolonies, i. That is, a new colony forms within a mother cell wall. These daughter colonies usually remain connected to one another for a long time. Sexual reproduction is not known in Crucigenia .

Occurrence

Coelastrum occurs in plankton predominantly from nutrient-rich waters, including rivers.

Systematics

The genus Crucigenia includes a few species. Algaebase names 11 recognized species.
