Cryosophila stauracantha is a species of palm from the genus Cryosophila that is native to Central America. It is sometimesgrown outdoorsas an ornamental plant in tropical areas.

features

Cryosophila stauracantha is a single- stemmed palm. Their trunk is usually 3 to 6 m high (rarely 1.2 to 10 m) and is usually upright, rarely curved upwards. The chest height diameter is 5 to 12.1 cm. The internodes are 1.2 to 2.9 cm long. The root thorns on the trunk are usually densest at the base of the trunk and thin out towards the top. There are 0 to 150 or more thorns for every 10 cm trunk length. Most are up to about 15 cm long, mostly between 4 and 6 cm. In rare cases, they can also be 40 cm long. They are unbranched or simply branched and usually point downwards.

The crown consists of 18 to 24 circular leaves . The petiole is usually 0.78 to 1.68 cm long. The middle segments of the leaf blade are usually 59.5 to 96.5 cm long, the marginal 43.5 to 96.5 cm. The central gap divides the blade into two equal halves and reaches 1 to 5 cm from the base of the blade. The primary columns divide each half into 5 to 8 sections, each consisting of 2 to 5 segments. The secondary crevices extend one third to three quarters of the length to the base.

The inflorescence is usually double-branched, and grows ascending from the petiole gap of the leaf that carries it. Later it is arching or pointing downwards. The main axis is usually 54 to 79.5 cm long, the peduncle 20.5 to 50.5 cm. The cover sheet is 9 to 19 cm long, the 5 to 6 bracts on the peduncle 4.1 to 9.3 cm. The 20 to 32 bracts of the inflorescence axis usually fall off at the time of flowering. The lowest are 10.5 to 23.5 cm long and narrow oval to oval. The flowers are white and 3.4 to 4.6 mm long with a diameter of 2.6 to 3.3 mm.

The fruit stand is open, the first-order side branches are visible. The fruit is 1.1 to 1.4 cm long and almost spherical. The only seed is 0.8 to 1.1 cm long.

distribution

Cryosophila stauracantha occurs in the extreme southeast of Mexico , in Belize and in northern Guatemala . It grows in wet to dry lowland forests up to 600 m above sea level.
