The metal-colored bark snap beetle ( Ctenicera pectinicornis ) is a beetle from the family of click beetles and the subfamily of Ctenicerinae. The males of the metallic green beetles have antennae with antennae-links that extend inwards at the sides. Because of this, the species of the genus are sometimes called the snail beetle. With a length of fifteen to eighteen millimeters, the beetle is one of the larger Central European click beetles. The color can vary to brown, golden or copper.

The species is classified as not endangered in the Red Lists of Rhineland-Palatinate .

Notes on the name

The species was described by Linnaeus in 1758 in the famous 10th edition of his Systema naturae under the scientific name Elater pectinicornis . The species name pectinicórnis and the current genus name Ctenícera mean exactly the same thing, only the species name is derived from the Latin pécten, péctinis, "comb" and córnu "horn, feeler", the genus name is derived from ancient Greek κτείς, κτενς ktenis ktenis .ρανός "Horn, feeler". Both allude to the particularly noticeable combed antennae of this species. These are almost sufficient for the first description: Elater thorace elytrisque viridi-aeneus, antennis pectinatis (Latin click beetle with green-metallic body and wing covers, antennae combed).

The genus Ctenicera includes ten species, of which only Ctenicera kendally does not occur in Europe

description

Beetle

The eleven-jointed antennae are very different in the male and female of the shiny metal bark beetle ( sexual dimorphism ). The antennae of the males are combed (picture 1), those of the females are sawn (picture 2). The extensions of the individual antennae in the male are called lamellae and their formation delimits the individual species of the genus from one another. In the shiny metal bark snap beetle, the third antenna element has already been extended to form a lamella, which, however, does not reach the height of the base of the fifth antenna element.

Many identifying features of the click beetle are on the underside of the body (Fig. 4). In the shiny metal bark beetle, the front breast is only slightly elongated towards the head (prosternal lobes, mentonnière), bent slightly downwards and almost straight (Fig. 7). It also does not cover the mouthparts when the beetle tilts its head slightly downwards when at rest. Laterally, the front chest with the chosen to bottom sides of the neck plate grown (Vorderbrustepisternen). The intergrowth seam is not smoothed and only set off in a linear manner inwards (simple Prosternal seam, Fig. 7). It is also not recessed in the shape of a channel to accommodate the feelers. At the back, the front breast is pulled out into a tip that is short for click beetles, which can snap into or snap out of a corresponding pit in the middle breast (Fig. 4, Fig. 7). This quick mechanism, typical of the family, enables the beetle to jump into the air from the supine position.

The legs are weak, the tarsi all five-limbed. They become evenly shorter towards the outside. The claws are not serrated or serrated.

The rear hip, which connects to the rear of the rear chest, is hollowed out to partially accommodate the rear thighs. The part that is on the same level as the rear chest is called the thigh ceiling . The thigh covers of the shiny metal beetle have a blunt tooth pointing backwards on the inner edge. They narrow evenly towards the outside (Fig. 6).

The front strip rises above the deflection of the feelers in front of the eyes . This rim-shaped protrusion runs inwards at the front and disappears before it reaches the center of the head (Fig. 8). The species of the subfamily are prognathic, the mouthparts do not point downwards when at rest.

The pronotum is gradually narrowed towards the front in the males, so it has a more trapezoidal outline. In females, it is more rounded in front of the middle. He has a clearly developed central channel. On the longitudinal bulges parallel to this the beetle is weakly dotted and shiny. The pronotum gradually spreads backwards to the elongated, pointed and clearly keeled rear corners. The weak hair on the pronotum is limited to the sides and is predominantly transverse, in any case not predominantly backwards.

The wing covers are hardly wider and narrow to a common rounded tip, while in the similar species Ctenicera heyeri each wing cover is individually pointed (Fig. 3). They are striped with dots, the intervals between the rows of dots are barely curved. The wing covers are also simply dotted and shiny. The label , which is enclosed by the base of the wing-covers, is oval.

Similar species

  • Ctenicera cupreus In the males the lamella is missing on the third antennae. The males are two-colored.
  • Ctenicera heyeri In males the lamella on the third antennae is significantly longer than the one. The females are characterized by separately pointed wing cover ends.

larva

The larvae ( wireworms ) live and pupate in the soil. They feed on roots.

distribution

The species is widespread from southern to northern Europe , but there are no reports from Greece and Albania . The distribution area also extends to Asia. The beetles can be found from May to July on the edges of forests and on damp meadows, also on grass heath and dry grassland. They sit on grass and flowers.
