The name of the parish is derived from the Aboriginal language and was first used in a rental agreement in 1868 in relation to a nearby pond. Previously, the place was spelled cubballing or cooballing . In 1899 the place was officially announced. It was one of the original stops on the Great Southern Railway . Around 1903 a school and a mayor's office were established. The parish became the Shires council seat in 1961 .
The parish did not develop until after the 1920s, presumably because of the size and economic opportunities in Narrogin. In 1946 the school was closed.
