The Cullumanushummel ( Bombus cullumanus ) is a rare and endangered species from the genus of the bumblebees ( Bombus ) within the order of the hymenoptera (Hymenoptera).

features

The queen and workers are black with a reddish abdomen. This makes them very difficult to distinguish from the stone bumblebee . The hind legs and the pollen basket, on the other hand, are completely black. The males have a different appearance and are quite colorful: the snout has a light spot, the collar is beige, the middle part is beige with a black band over it, the front part of the abdomen is beige and is closed by a black transverse band on it a red end follows.

Habitat and Distribution

The Cullumanushummel prefers calcareous flower meadows, dry, sunny sandy areas as well as flower-rich paths and agricultural areas. The species was observed z. B. on scabies-knapweed and blackberry bushes . Nests have not yet been found, but it is believed that these are underground, e.g. B. in abandoned mouse or vole caves .

The species is distributed in Western Europe from the Pyrenees northwards to Sweden. However, a significant decrease in populations is recorded.

Systematics

In the past, two Eastern European forms were counted as belonging to this species, but today they themselves have species status ( Bombus serrisquama and Bombus appolineus ).

Danger

The population of this bumblebee has decreased dramatically in recent years and today there are only secured populations in the Pyrenees and the Massif Central . In Western Europe, the species is endangered. In Germany the species is considered extinct.
