Cumberland is a place in British Columbia , Canada . It has around 3,700 residents and is located in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island . Cumberland at times one of the largest Chinatowns on the Canadian west coast.

history

Originally the place was called Union . It was named after the Union Coal Company, which began mining the coal discovered at Coal Creek in 1870 in 1871. In 1874 a tram and road were built to Comox Harbor, now Royston . After that, however, the mining costs were too high for the company, so it was interrupted. In 1884 Robert Dunsmuir bought the company. He also bought the Perserverance mine four years later and the Baynes Sound mine in 1881. In 1897 the mine produced 700 to 1000 tons of coal per day. 600 people were employed there who lived in Union, a town with a population of 3,000. In 1891 James Dunsmuir renamed it Cumberland after the English county of Cumberland . The Vancouver Island earthquake in 1946 destroyed the chimneys of local homes.

Self-management

The granting of local self-government for the municipality took place on January 1, 1958 ( incorporated as Village ).

Demographics

The last official census , the 2016 Census , showed a population of 3,753 inhabitants for the settlement, after the 2011 census only showed a population of 3,398 inhabitants for the municipality. Compared to the last census in 2011, the population increased by a clear 10.4% and developed faster than the provincial average, there with a population increase of 5.6%. In the census period 2006 to 2011, the population in the municipality had already increased by 23.0%, while the provincial average only increased by 7.0%.

At the 2016 census, the average age of the residents was 40.0 years, well above the provincial average of 42.3 years. The median age of the residents was determined to be 39.3 years. The median age of all residents in the province in 2016 was 43.0 years. For the 2011 census, a median age of 38.2 years was determined for the residents of the municipality and 41.9 years for the residents of the province.
