Curry Lookout (also Camp Regalvista ) is a lookout point on Curry Ridge . The refuge , built in 1924, is listed on the US National Register of Historic Places .

history

With the construction of the Alaska Railroad from Seward to Fairbanks , the tourist development of the area around the railway began. At the lying half way station Curry 1923, the Curry Hotel built.

In order to accommodate tourists staying for several days in addition to the overnight guests passing through, a 164 m long pedestrian suspension bridge was built over the Susitna River in the following year . From there, a hiking and bridle path led to the level of Curry Ridge in Denali State Park . A refuge was built at the highest point with a good view of Denali . The hut cost US $ 616.60 to build and the eight-kilometer trail cost US $ 304.25.

With the fire of the hotel in 1957 and the demolition of the suspension bridge, which had no longer been safe to walk on, access to the viewpoint from the side of the Susitna River ended. With the completion of the George Parks Highway in 1971, it was possible to hike the Curry Ridge and thus the viewpoint from the western side. The trail begins at the Lower Troublesome Creek Campground at Milepost 137.2.

The Denali State Park administration plans to build a hiking trail to the Curry Lookout from the planned tourist center above the highway. There are also further plans to revitalize the connection to the train stop in Curry.

Building

The hexagonal wooden structure has a floor area of 13 m². There is no foundation. Each side is around 2 m long and 2.40 m high. There are windows on five sides and the door on the sixth side. The tent-like roof was covered with felt. In the middle of the roof is a flagpole. Tensions led from this mast to the ground and hold the building.

The building has remained unchanged since its construction and has been exposed to the elements. Individual windows have since been destroyed.

location

Curry Lookout is located at an altitude of around 800 m on Curry Ridge. The building offers a good panoramic view of Denali , the Alaska Range and the Talkeetna Mountains .
