The Curtis Arboretum is an arboretum located in Cheltenham , Montgomery County , Pennsylvania and listed on the National Register of Historic Places .

The residence of the banker Abraham Barker had originally stood on the property since 1866 until he ran into financial difficulties and in 1891 rented the property to the publisher Cyrus HK Curtis . Its publishing house, the Curtis Publishing Company , published, among other things, Ladies' Home Journal and The Saturday Evening Post . Although his newspapers collapsed financially due to soaring paper prices, Curtis became one of the richest Americans in history. In 1895 Curtis bought the property and built a Neo-Renaissance mansion on it , which he named Lyndon . The landscape architect in charge of this construction project was Frederick Law Olmsted, a leader in the field . In 1924, his daughter Mary Louise Curtis Bok , who was later married to Efrem Zimbalist , founded the Curtis Institute of Music in honor of her father . Curtis was a passionate organ player and had Curtis Hall built on Lyndon for this purpose . This building, also used as a music conservatory , is the only one that has survived , as the other buildings in Lyndon were demolished after Curtis' death in 1933 . Today the 19 hectare arboretum includes  memorials for war veterans.

On March 20, 2002, the Curtis Arboretum was added to the National Register of Historic Places as a site.
