Custer's Revenge

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Custer's Revenge , also known as Westward Ho and The White Man Came , is an adult video game released for the Atari 2600 in 1982 . It is the first of three titles in the Swedish Erotica series from game developer Mystique . The game caused a lot of controversy after it was released because it roughly simulated the rape of an Indian woman .

Mystique had to file for bankruptcy during the Video Game Crash in 1983, whereby the rights to this game went to the Playaround company , which, like Mystique, tried to make money with erotic video games in America.

Gameplay

The player takes on the role of General George Armstrong Custer , who is dressed in nothing but a cavalry hat, shoes and a saber. He has a clearly visible erection and tries to reach an Indian woman who is tied to a torture stake in order to copulate with her. On the way he has to avoid several obstacles like arrows and cacti. The aim of the game is to get as many points as possible.

In a variant of the game published by Playaround under the name General Retreat , it is the naked woman who tries to have sex with Custer. The arrows were replaced by cannon balls in this version.

marketing

The game was selling well relatively quickly, with the packaging saying "NOT FOR SALE TO MINORS". The game sold for $ 49.95. The following sentence was in the manual:

"... if the kids catch you and should ask, tell them Custer and the maiden are just dancing."

"... if your children catch you playing and ask you about it, tell them that Custer and the woman are just dancing together."

The following could be read on the packaging:

“She's not about to take it lying down, by George! Help is on the way. By God! He's coming. "

“It's not about taking it from George lying down! Help is on the way. With God! He comes."

reception

Shortly after it was published, Custer's Revenge received harsh criticism from women's rights organizations for showing a rape and embellishing it with packaging texts like the one above. Other groups such as Women Against Pornography or spokesmen for the North American Indians and critics of the video game industry protested against the game. The American sociologist and feminist Andrea Dworkin said of this game that it caused a lot of rapes among Indian women.

The activists tried to have the game banned, which they at least succeeded in doing in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma . In Suffolk County, New York , a eleven million was US dollars more expensive trial held against the legalization of the game's release.

Media attention ensured that this game was sold 80,000 times. Atari itself had little to do with the game as it only provided the platform for the video game. Stuart Kesten the President of American Multiple Industries (Mystique) said of the game:

"Our object is not to arouse, our object is to entertain [...] When people play our games, we want them smiling, we want them laughing."

“Our goal is not to excite, but to entertain […] When people play our games, we want them to smile; we want them to laugh. "

The video game was introduced by the Angry Video Game Nerd in the video ATARI PORNO . In addition, the game was named one of the worst games of all time by PC Magazine in Australia in 2008. In the same year, the game's Indian was chosen among the Top Ten Disturbingly Sexual Game Characters on the Games.net website. UGO.com listed this game in its top 10 worst racist video games in history. University of Calgary Professor Tom Keenan quoted this game in a 2008 guest commentary on the subject of violence in video games.

The South Park episode You're Getting Old features an arcade machine from Custer's Revenge.
