distribution and habitat

Distribution map of the Cyatholipidae

The species are distributed in Central and South Africa , Madagascar , Australia and New Zealand . In Jamaica only one kind occurs (on dentipes Pokennips ). The endemic Malagasy representatives of the Cyatholipidae live mostly in moist montane forests of the tropics from 600 m above sea level up to 2000 m. They hang at a height of 20 cm to 2 m next to their ceiling nets , which they weave between plants. However, certain species, such as Scharffia rossi , also live in arid regions such as savannahs .

Fossils

Fossil are some species of this spider family ( Spinilipus with one kind and Succinilipus with three kinds) from the Baltic amber ( Eocene ) and the same age Bitterfeld amber .

Systematics

An older synonym for the family discovered in Africa in the late 19th century is Teemenaaridae. The World Spider Catalog currently lists 23 genera and 58 species for the Cyatholipidae. (As of June 2016)
