Cyclistes Professionnels Associés

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cyclistes Professionnels Associés (fr., Abbr .: CPA , dt. About: United Cyclists ) is an international association of cyclist professionals who are active in UCI WorldTeams and UCI ProTeams . It is often referred to as the " drivers union ".

For a long time the CPA was organized as the umbrella organization of a few national associations (Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Portugal, Belgium, France, the Netherlands), so that not all professional cyclists were represented by it. In particular, there were no national associations in Great Britain and the states of the former USSR . In October 2014, the Association of North American Professional Road Cyclists was founded, the first non-European member association. In 2016 the British an Irish Professional Cyclists' Association was founded. The establishment of further sub-associations is planned. In June 2020, one Belgian, one Australian and one Polish member association were excluded.

The CPA was founded on May 19, 1999 during the Giro d'Italia 1999 , when the 1998 Giro and Tour winner Marco Pantani was disfellowshipped for blood doping. The organization stands up for the concerns of the drivers towards the race organizers, u. a. when designing the route for the large tours, towards the professional cycling teams , etc. a. because of the minimum salaries, and towards the World Cycling Federation Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) and a. because of the rules of cycling. She also sees herself as a pioneer in the fight against doping in cycling.

In 2017, the CPA added a section dedicated to women's cycling . The 1997 road world champion, Alessandra Cappellotto , was the first chairman of this section . In competition with this section of the CPA, The Cyclists' Alliance was founded in the same year as an independent association for professional female cyclists.

According to the UCI, the CPA had 865 members in 2008 and 2009.

With the association of operators of professional cycling teams " Association Internationale des Groupes Cyclistes Professionnels " (AIGCP), the CPA negotiates the minimum working conditions of the riders in a collective agreement-like agreement ("Joint Agreements" / "Accord Paritaire").

The first president of the CPA was the former Italian professional cyclist and hour record holder Francesco Moser . He was followed by Cédric Vasseur from October 2007 to November 2009 . His successor in office was Gianni Bugno .

In June 2018 the Dutch member association left the CPA. He criticized the lack of representation of the riders outside the major cycling nations and expressed his support for the Cyclists' Alliance founded by Iris Slappendel and Carmen Small for female cyclists . In the subsequent presidential elections, Bugno prevailed against David Millar thanks to the block votes of the member groups from France, Italy and Spain. A group of 27 active cyclists, including Chris Froome , Geraint Thomas , Greg Van Avermaet and Tom Dumoulin, criticized the electoral process as unfair, as the riders without membership in a national member association would have had to vote in person, which was not possible for most of them.
