Cycloolefin copolymers ( COC ) are a class of engineering polymers .

synthesis

Cycloolefin copolymers are obtained by metallocene- catalyzed copolymerization of cycloolefins (such as norbornene ) with alk-1-enes (such as ethene ).

Synthesis of cycloolefin copolymers

properties

Although they only consist of olefins , COC are amorphous and therefore transparent, in contrast to semi-crystalline polyolefins such as polyethylene and polypropylene . The properties of COC can be changed over a wide range by changing the installation ratios of cyclic and linear olefins. This essentially sets the heat resistance in a range from 65 to 190 ° C.

All COCs have a number of properties in common, such as good thermoplastic flowability , high rigidity , strength and hardness as well as low density and high transparency with good acid and alkali resistance.

use

The low birefringence is of interest for optical applications . In the field of medicine / diagnostics, the excellent biocompatibility , especially blood compatibility, and the extremely low water absorption / water vapor permeability should be emphasized.

Commercial applications of COCs are therefore various optical functional films in flat screens as well as lenses and sensors . In medicine / diagnostics, prefilled syringes, microtiter plates , cuvettes and vials are used. COCs are also used as blister packaging and shrink or twist film .
