Company history

Red Hat was founded in 1993 by Marc Ewing and merged with the ACC owned by Canadian Bob Young in 1995 . Young took over as CEO of the company , which was transferred to Matthew J. Szulik in 1999 , who led the company until the end of 2007.

In July 1999, the Stuttgart-based company Delix, manufacturer of the German Linux Distribution (DLD), from which Red Hat GmbH emerged, was taken over. On August 11, 1999, Red Hat went public with an initial public offering of six million shares at a price of $ 14 per share on the NASDAQ stock exchange . On November 15, 1999, Red Hat announced that it would take over open source developer Cygnus Solutions. Red Hat has been responsible for Cygwin since then . Other takeovers followed, including ArsDigita, Sistina and those of the Netscape Directory Server.

In 2003, Red Hat decided to focus only on corporate customers. Therefore, the further development of Red Hat Linux (RHL) has been formally handed over to the community project Fedora . Fedora's core team continues to consist of Red Hat paid developers. However, opportunities for volunteer participation have become more extensive than before. Red Hat's premium product Red Hat Enterprise Linux is based on the Fedora code . (RHEL) On October 19, 2005, company co-founder Bob Young left Red Hat to pursue private projects.

In 2005, Red Hat was the market leader in Linux distributions for servers. Red Hat has approximately 10,700 employees and 90 offices worldwide. The headquarters are in Raleigh (North Carolina) in the USA .

The company is active in the development, implementation and management of Linux and open source solutions for network infrastructures. The product range extends from embedded systems to web servers and includes additional support, training and management offers.

In June 2006, Red Hat completed the acquisition of JBoss, the world's leading provider of open source middleware , to accelerate the move towards service-oriented architectures (SOA). Red Hat also enables web-enabled applications to be operated on an open source platform.

After Szulik stepped down, Jim Whitehurst succeeded him as CEO and President in 2008.

In 2017, Red Hat was once again among the top 25 in Forbes' list of the 100 most innovative companies in the world, ranking 23rd.

Takeover by IBM

On October 28, 2018, Red Hat announced that IBM would acquire Red Hat for $ 190 per share, subject to approval by Red Hat shareholders. That corresponds to an enterprise value of approximately 34 billion US dollars. The companies completed the acquisition in July 2019 [obsolete] after approval by the relevant authorities . At the end of November 2018, it was announced that Red Hat had acquired the Israeli start-up NooBaa as part of the takeover by IBM.

On May 1, 2019, Red Hat introduced a new company logo that only includes a red hat without the person underneath. With the simplified logo, display problems with small scaling and negative associations are to be avoided.

Contribution to the Linux kernel

Red Hat developers regularly make a lot of contributions to the Linux kernel . According to the analysis published by the Linux Foundation in 2016, Red Hat contributed 8 percent of the commits to the kernels 3.19 - 4.7 the second most frequently (behind Intel ). In the 2017 report, Redhat is also in third place with 7.2% of the commits to the kernels 4.8-4.13.

Products

The products are developed and distributed as commercial software , most of which are closely related to the Fedora project .

One of the products on offer is a Linux operating system. The development takes place within the framework of the Fedora project (formerly Fedora Core). The marketed variant with adaptations and better tested versions of software packages is called Red Hat Enterprise Linux ( RHEL ).

With the JBoss Enterprise Middleware Suite (JEMS), Red Hat offers solutions in the areas of Java EE application server (JBoss EAP based on the WildFly Application Server), object / relational persistence ( Hibernate ), portal platform ( JBoss Portal ), workflow / Business Process Management / BPEL (JBoss jBPM ), Business Rules (JBoss Rules), Object Data Cache (JBoss Cache), Distributed Transaction Management (JBoss Transactions), Enterprise Messaging (JBoss Messaging) and Development Tools (JBoss Eclipse IDE) on.

The certification system ( Red Hat Certificate System ) that was also acquired is in charge of the Dogtag Certificate System project .

We are currently working on a comprehensive, centralized management platform for various operating systems and platforms: FreeIPA . It combines technologies such as Kerberos , LDAP , DNS and NTP and includes the areas of "identity control" (identity), "guidelines" (policy) and "monitoring" (audit) of a heterogeneous client / server computer landscape.
